Top 5 Reasons to Book Family Photos in Spring

Family, Session Tips

As a San Antonio-based lifestyle photographer, I know how precious family photos are. They capture the love, joy, and fleeting moments of your family’s story. While fall is traditionally a popular time for family sessions, spring offers so many unique benefits that make it the perfect season to update your family portraits. Here’s why you should book your spring family photos now!

1. Beautiful Weather

Texas’s springtime weather is perfect for outdoor sessions. The temperatures are warm but not overwhelmingly hot and humid like they can be in the summer. You won’t have to worry about sweating through your outfits, and little ones will be much more comfortable running around and playing while I capture those candid, joy-filled moments.

Warmer temps means your family photos can incorporate locations with rivers and lakes, allowing your kids to dip their toes or completely submerge themselves in the water for some end-of-session fun.

Of course, Fall can have beautiful weather, too, but Fall weather is less consistent than Spring’s here in south Texas. We can experience 90 degree temps well into October. This makes wearing the cute sweaters and boots you had planned really uncomfortable. We also experience cold fronts that bring extremely cold weather and you never know if your scheduled photo session will land on a day when it’ll be 90 degrees of 40 degrees.

2. Gorgeous Spring Blooms

Nature puts on a stunning display in the spring, offering a dreamy backdrop for your photos. From bluebonnets to wildflowers and lush green landscapes, its the time of year when San Antonio shows off its color (far better than Fall since our leaves dont really change colors until December). These seasonal blooms create a soft, romantic, and timeless setting that enhances the beauty of your family portraits.

There are several locations that are best for photos during the spring, too, such as Cibolo Nature Center, the Botanical Gardens and Japense Tea Gardens. But other locations have a special charm to them during Spring like the portion of the River Walk in the King William District where the trees blossom and the butterfly garden comes alive.

3. More Flexibility in Your Schedule

Fall can be incredibly hectic with school, sports, and holiday events filling up your calendar. In contrast, spring tends to be a bit more relaxed. With fewer major holidays and school activties, it’s much easier to find a date that works for your whole family without feeling like you’re squeezing in one more thing during an already packed season.

Since Fall is also the most popular time for scheduling family photos, it’s harder to find locations that aren’t swarming with other families getting their picture taken. There have been a few instances where popular parks had no parking available due to the high number of photo sessions occurring on weekend evenings. Whereas, in the spring, you’re competing with less photo sessions (except for maybe senior grad photos). This means less distractions for little kids, less waiting for people to move, more options available for backdrops, no audience as you do the silly prompts I give you, and quieter spaces.

4. Later Sunsets Mean Easier Weekday Sessions

One of the biggest challenges of fall family photos is how early the sun sets. When golden hour is at 4 pm, scheduling a session on a weekday is likely not an option for most families. In spring, the days are getting longer, which means we have more flexibility in scheduling your session—even on a weekday! Later sunsets allow us to take advantage of that gorgeous golden-hour glow without rushing or interfering with rush hour or your family’s dinner or bedtime routine.

5. The Perfect Excuse to Dress in Springtime Outfits

Spring fashion is light, airy, and full of fresh colors that photograph beautifully. Think flowy dresses, pastel tones, and soft neutrals that complement the natural scenery. Unlike fall, when layers and darker colors dominate, spring gives you a chance to embrace a bright and joyful aesthetic that feels fresh and timeless.
